Menopause Myth & Fact

May 13, 2023

Menopause is a natural biological process that occurs in women typically around their late 40s to early 50s. During menopause, a woman’s reproductive hormones decline, leading to the cessation of menstruation and the end of fertility. There are several myths and facts associated with menopause that are important to understand:

Myth: Menopause happens suddenly.
Fact: Menopause is a gradual process that usually occurs over several years. It starts with perimenopause, which is the transitional phase leading up to menopause when hormone levels fluctuate. Menopause is officially diagnosed after a woman has gone without a menstrual period for 12 consecutive months.

Myth: Menopause only affects older women.
Fact: While menopause typically occurs in women in their late 40s to early 50s, it can happen earlier. Premature menopause can occur before the age of 40 due to factors such as genetics, medical treatments, or underlying health conditions.

Myth: Menopause leads to weight gain.
Fact: While hormonal changes during menopause can contribute to weight redistribution, weight gain is not an inevitable consequence. Aging, lifestyle factors, and a decrease in muscle mass due to reduced physical activity can also play a role. Engaging in regular exercise and maintaining a healthy diet can help manage weight during and after menopause.

Myth: Menopause causes loss of sexual desire.
Fact: Hormonal changes during menopause can impact libido and vaginal dryness, leading to changes in sexual desire and comfort. However, each woman’s experience is unique, and factors such as relationship dynamics, psychological factors, and overall well-being can influence sexual desire.
